WHO WE ARE

The RADA Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting artists and creative spaces in Asheville’s River Arts District. We work in partnership with the River Arts District Artists (RADA) membership organization to ensure artists have what they need to create, connect, and thrive.

Founded in 2024 by Jeffrey Burroughs and Julie Bell over coffee, the Foundation quickly emerged as a lifeline in the wake of Hurricane Helene. What began as a vision for equity and opportunity quickly became a vital support system during a time of crisis. Today, our work continues with even greater urgency and purpose.

OUR MISSION + VISION

The RADA Foundation exists to foster and advance the arts in Asheville’s River Arts District by supporting the efforts of the River Arts District Artists (RADA) organization.

  • Our work is built on three core programs: Scholarships. Space. Support.

  • We aim to be a leader in providing progressive services to our members, including shared spaces, scholarship opportunities, and technical assistance programs for both professional and emerging artists.

  • We are working to ensure that artists remain at the heart of the River Arts District, not displaced by development or disaster, but rooted in a thriving and resilient creative community.

  • We believe art is not just a product: it is a process that shapes culture, builds community, and drives resilience. The RADA Foundation supports a creative community where everyone belongs. We are committed to building inclusive and accessible spaces and programs that reflect the diverse voices of the River Arts District.

WHY THE ARTS MATTER

The River Arts District is home to more than 750 artists working across every medium, including painting, sculpture, glassblowing, fiber arts, and fine craft. It is one of the most vibrant artist communities in the country and draws visitors from around the world.

After Hurricane Helene, hundreds of artists lost their studios, tools, and income. Many are still displaced.

The RADA Foundation exists to ensure they are not left behind. Our programs are designed to keep artists in place, remove barriers to opportunity, and invest in the creative future of the district.

The River Arts District is more than a destination. It is a living, breathing ecosystem of makers, dreamers, and risk-takers. Art shapes how we gather, how we heal, and how we move forward. It is both culture and commerce, and it deserves investment. Supporting artists helps preserve the soul of Asheville.
